What you will do:

Reporting to Manager, Building Services and Corporate Security in the Facilities Design Management (Mechanical Services) division, your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:  

  • Perform predicative, preventive, and reactive maintenance on a variety of plumbing systems and related operating equipment, building environmental systems, building envelope, and grounds at various City Facilities in a safe, efficient and reliable manner
  • Perform work in adherence to all relevant plumbing, building, fuel and all other relevant codes as well as local by-laws, as applicable
  • Carry out plumbing related maintenance duties such as new installations, and repairs to piping systems, fixtures and other plumbing devices used for water distribution and waste water disposal in a variety of City owned or operated commercial and industrial buildings
  • Participate in the maintenance and repair of  variety of mechanical equipment including but not limited to : heating ventilation and air conditioning systems (HVAC), water treatment systems, air handling systems, steam and hot water boilers and related equipment, circulation pumps, electronic and gas fired humidification systems, sump and sewage pumps, pressure washers and associated hot water recovery systems, chillers and cooling tower systems, and fire and life safety systems, refrigeration plants (within code and licensing restrictions)
  • Troubleshoot problem areas within facilities and buildings to identify cause of failure and determine the best course of action considering performance, cost, energy efficiency and industry best practice
  • Maintain equipment history files and log service work in Maximo (work order system)for all equipment and work performed
  • Work with supervisor to procure parts or service in accordance to corporate purchasing by-laws
  • Participate in the implementation of energy management programs and initiatives , recommend energy efficient measures as applicable
  • Arrange for the removal of hazardous materials and maintain associated manifests, as required
  • Participate on various City teams and initiatives as applicable
  • Participate in an apprenticeship program as a mentor, as applicable
  • Participate in the Corporate after-hours on-call program (mandatory)

What you will bring: 

  • Minimum Grade 12 education or equivalent
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience related to the duties listed as a fully licensed 306A red seal plumber having industrial/ commercial experience and known use of all plumbing systems
  • Must hold a Ministry of Labour, Training, and Skills Development Certificate of Qualification as a Licensed Plumber (306A) in Ontario
  • TSSA Gas Technician certification is preferred (please see below chart outlining Gas Technician premiums)*
  • Must hold a valid Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA) Backflow Prevention License or be willing and able to obtain within one (1) year of hire
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high level knowledge of plumbing equipment and processes
  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written) with the ability to deal with internal and external contacts in a courteous and efficient manner
  • Must have basic computer skills using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook and Excel); Experience with MMS computer system (Maximo) would be an asset; Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings and specifications a must
  • Valid MTO ‘G’ class driver’s licence in good standing with driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (maximum of 3 demerit points; maximum of 2 convictions within the previous 36 months; no driving related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months; and no ignition interlock restrictions) is required to perform the job.

  • A Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check satisfactory to the City
  • Proof of your current and valid certificate(s), licenses and/or educational qualification, if applicable

*Wage Information:

Licensed Plumber (306A) + Gas Technician 1 Certification:   $46.36 per hour (Class J $40.36 per hour + $6.00 G.1. Certificate Premium)

Licensed Plumber (306A) + Gas Technician 2 Certification : $44.36 per hour (Class J $40.36 per hour + $4.00  G.2. Certificate Premium)

Licensed Plumber (306A) + Gas Technician 3 Certification : $42.36 per hour (Class J $40.36 per hour + $2.00  G.3. Certificate Premium)

In accordance with Appendix ‘A’ Wage Schedule of the CUPE 1542 Collective Agreement, a rate of 5% less than the corresponding full-time rate will apply for any incumbent while serving a probationary period.  Wage rates and premiums are in accordance with the CUPE 1542 Collective Agreement.

Shift Information: Hours of work will generally be scheduled between Monday and Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00p.m. with some flexibility and overtime required. The City reserves the right to implement shift work, as operationally required, in accordance with the applicable Collective Agreement. Participation in the Division’s After-hours Standby System is Mandatory - compensation consistent with the current Collective Agreement.

**Please note: Candidates must be willing and eligible to obtain a minimum TSSA Gas Technician three (3) certification within one (1) year, Gas Technician 2 certification within two (2) years and Gas Technician 1 within four (4) years of start date.
