What you will do:

Reporting to the Coordinator, Active Living Programs in the Recreation Services Division, your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Prepares class content and instruct classes following required Recreation Services and City of Waterloo standards
  • Creates an enjoyable experience for customers in a welcoming and inclusive environment
  • Responsible for demonstrating and explaining proper technique, prioritizing consensual form correction practices
  • Completes records and reports including class attendance and accident/incident report forms as required
  • Ensures that rooms are in a safe condition for class, monitors the safety of program participants at all times, and enforces City procedures and safety regulations
  • Prepare, set-up, and take-down of equipment and supplies required for class
  • Review emergency procedures with participants and responds to and/or assists with on-site emergencies, incidents and accidents
  • Respond to participants immediate questions and provide general customer service support
  • Acts as a liaison between the City of Waterloo and participants
  • Annual re-certification (if applicable) or annual training in related modality, diversity, equity and inclusion or to align with program goals.
  • Performs other related duties as required

What you will bring: 

  • Valid Fitness, Wellness, and/or Personal Training Certification for the course(s) being taught, such as Can Fit Pro, CPTN, 200hr YTT, Pilates (Mat), Barre, Zumba or equivalent education and a minimum 4 years of experience instructing in the specific program that brings an equivalent level of skill and efficacy
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively facilitate fitness lesson programs and support a broad spectrum of fitness levels in one class in a manner that encourages participants to have agency over their class experience
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to Reconciliation, Equity, Accessibility, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Strong commitment to delivering quality customer service
  • Ability to work respectfully and effectively in a team environment.

What we will require:

  • A current Police Vulnerable Sector Check satisfactory to the city is required as a condition of hire
  • Proof of your current and valid certificate(s), licenses and/or educational qualifications, if applicable
  • Standard First Aid with CPR C certification recognized by the Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) is required

Hours of work:   

*Schedules are built seasonally based on participation trends minimum of 1 hr / week with a max of 24 hrs / week. Classes are offered seven days a week, from early morning through to late evening.

*Please note that this position requires access to reliable transportation as work hours may be outside of public transportation operations.

*Hourly Rate: Instructor Premium

An additional $5.00 or $15.00 per hour pay premium may be provided when teaching a specialized skill or modality.
