What you will do:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Transportation Operations your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:  

  • Participate in winter control operations (shift work) including salt application and snow removal with snow removing vehicles and equipment
  • Participate in general Transportation Services operations including, but not limited to, leaf collection, cold/hot asphalt patching, and landscaping as required
  • Operate an articulated loader during winter control operations
  • Maintain proper written or electronic records of activities as required by Ontario Regulations and internal policies and / or procedures
  • Ensure safe and efficient operation, care and maintenance of tools, equipment and vehicles and perform daily checks on vehicles and equipment
  • Maintain a safe work environment by taking necessary precautions and applying safety procedures in accordance with health and safety legislation and City of Waterloo policies
  • Communicate and co-operate effectively with others, respecting the values of the corporation, both internally and externally

What you will bring: 

  • Minimum of Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
  • 1-3 years of experience in a related field involving manual physical labour and operation of power tools, vehicles and equipment
  • Must have a working knowledge with winter control operations including but not limited to salting, loading snow, snow plowing
  • Snow Fighter training is an asset; must be willing to attend
  • Valid MTO ‘DZ’ class driver’s licence in good standing with driver’s abstract acceptable to the City (maximum of 3 demerit points; maximum of 2 convictions within the previous 36 months; no driving related criminal code convictions within the previous 36 months; and no ignition interlock restrictions) is required to perform the job.

What we will require:

  • A Police Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check satisfactory to the City
  • Proof of your current and valid certificate(s), licenses and/or educational qualification, if applicable
  • Use of personal cell phones may be requested for entering hours of service, material usage and circle checks; Wi-Fi is provided to avoid data charges.

*Wage Information: Rates will be in accordance with the CUPE 1542 Collective Agreement. While performing winter control functions, typically from mid-November to April, the Class E rate may apply. In accordance with Appendix ‘A’ Wage Schedule, a rate of 5% less than the corresponding pay rate will apply for any incumbent while serving a probationary period.

Length of Seasonal Contract:   Seasonal positions will typically commence mid-October through to April 2025, up to a maximum of eight (8) months.

Shift Information: Shift work will be required based upon operational requirements, including days, afternoons, evenings, weekends, nights and holidays. Shift premium may apply in accordance with the CUPE 1542 Collective Agreement.
